The character development and the plot are so finely established that you were completely drawn in by everyone. For a moment, she thinks of Felix. However, this book alone was enough to change my mind.

The authors language and imagery is brilliant. Women which due to no fault of their own were bought and sold as if they mere commodities and some were even stolen. Itโs always somewhere I have wanted to go or take a time machine too โ it would probably be too dangerous for a woman to stay for any length of time, and judging by what Iโve now read โ Iโm glad this visit was just via a book. Amara is not here for living the rest of her days as a brothel slave and is slowly starting to make her plan of getting out a reality - from attending parties with the rich, to spending a week with the Admiral of the Fleet to brokering loans behind Felixโs back to get out.

What I particularly liked was Amara's empathy for these characters, but also her challenges to them. Itโs like walking around Pompeii in a virtual reality simulation it feels that real.

This book tells the story of Amara, daughter of a loving Doctor-father, but when he dies, Amaraโs mother has no choice but to sell her as a slave, then becomes a concubine until sheโs sold again to Felix, who runs Pompeiiโs infamous brothel, the Wolf Den. She is all the things you want from a female lead protagonist: strong, resourceful, clever, and yet she never loses her vulnerability or her empathy and emotions.

This book doesnโt beat around the bush with language to show how the lives of slaves in Pompeii and its brothels were really like. The first chapter for me was actually quite tough, I found it hard to understand what was happening, who was who - but it didnโt take long to get up to speed and become familiar with the world and the characters.

Thereโs golden nuggets of information like this throughout including sayings of the time. Set in the infamous Wolf Den brothel, the lead protagonist is Amara, who was sold into slavery and it is through her eyes that we experience both the brutality of The Wolf Den, but also the strength and friendships of the women there.
Roll on The House with the Golden Door! Amara was sold by her mother.
